Loose Ball Drill #5B: Shats “Broken Play” Loose Ball (Up-High)
INTERMEDIATE
- Start with players lined up in both corners (near the crease position), on their proper floor side, in one or both ends of the floor (depending on numbers). Coaches should station pylons just above the shooter positions on both sides of the floor, and be prepared with balls just above the point position.
- Variation #1 (10 min): "Loose Ball." On the coaches whistle players must run up around the pylon on their side of the floor, with coaches rolling a ball into the middle and players chasing the loose ball; finishing with a shot on net if they get it (5 seconds max). Players should exit the drill alongside the boards and play the coaches whistle for drill termination, where required.
- Variation #2 (10 min): "1 Vs. 1." Same as the variation above except one side starts with the balls (switch halfway through) and rolls the ball to the far-side line as they are approaching their pylon. The player in the other line goes around their pylon, picks up the loose ball, then attacks the net one-on-one in the open floor (partial breakaway).
- Variation #3 (10 min): "2-On-1 - Loose Ball." Same as the variation above except one line sends two players, with the first player having the ball and playing defense against a 2-on-1 after they roll it to the player on the far-side.
- Variation #4 (10 min): "2-On-1 - Pass." Similar to the variation above except there is now a defensive line starting next to the crease with balls and two lines in the corners now on their wrong floor-side instead of the proper floor-side. The defender passes to either line as they simultaneously make a short run out of the corner, catch the ball and criss-cross at the restraining line, running 2-on-1 back to the net. This is the classic pre-game Warm Up drill.
- Variation #5 (10 min): "3-On-2 - Pass." Same as the variation above except there are now 2 defenders, the first with a ball and the second without; with 2 offensive players also coming out of the corner that has more players, the other corner sending one player.
- The first defender passes to the first player in the line with 2 offensive players, with offensive players passing the ball back-and-forth near the restraining line, leaving the second player from the side with 2 offensive players with the ball, running 3-on-2 back to the net (defenders in an I-formation).
