Games Drill #20: Team Face-Off Game
ADVANCED (10-20 MIN)
- Begin with two even teams (different coloured pinnies) positioned both on the bench and on the floor.
- The drill starts with a face-off at centre-floor. The team that obtains the loose ball out of the scrum has one attempt to take it to the opponent's end and obtain a quality shot. Coaches can create a competition and give half a point for a victorious "scrum" and one point for a goal; games up to five (Variation #1A). Another option if you have at least 20 players is to force players line change after winning the face-off (Variation #1B), playing the Offense-Defense transition system, or Lines. This variation also allows for aggressive pressure against the team that is line-changing, which is great practice for advanced players.
- Have teams switch directions in terms of what goalie they are shooting on halfway through the drill, after 10 minutes.
- Coaches should also keep an eye and give players extended rest periods where required (in order to keep the intensity of the drill at a high level).
- Teams should experiment with different face-off formations: Balanced, 3 Defenders Back, 2 offenders deep, "32," etc., with the losing team doing extra sprints, planks, push-ups etc., at the end of practice.
