Games Drill #19: Small-Sided Games
- Arrange two teams equally on both sides of the restraining line, in one or both ends of the floor depending on numbers; with players facing into the defensive zone. On one side of the restraining-line is “Team 1” and on the opposite side is “Team 2” (make more creative names if possible).
- Referees and shot clocks (20 seconds) are an option. Goalies are also optional for 3 vs. 3, with 3' x 3' nets and 8' creases recommended for young kids; if 3 foot nets are unavailable, turning a 4' x 4' net upside down is another alternative.
- If at any point during the games the ball is near the restraining-line, the players not in the drill should be encouraged to "bat the ball" back into play, helping establish good "flow" in the game.
- Note: all of the variations below can also be run full-floor instead of half-floor (at the coaches discretion).
Variation #1 (10-20 min): "3 Vs. 3." Move the nets against the side-boards, halfway between the goal-line and restraining-line. The first 3 players in line on each team enter the drill, starting with a face-off or loose ball. If it's a loose ball, have players enter from the defensive side, closest to the goalie.
Alternatively, this variation can be performed 2 v.s 2 and 1 vs. 1, depending on the purposes of the coach.
Shift length can be timed intervals, or coaches can have players line change "on-the-go" or "on-the-fly"(without stopping the game). See Games Fundamental Skills Analysis for further details.
Variation #2 (10-20 min): "4 Vs. 4/5 Vs. 5." Coaches must first establish a "clearing line," which defensive players must run past if there is a turnover by the team on offense.
After the defensive team crosses the line they are then able to take the ball to the net for a quality shot, as they are now on offense; otherwise the Offense-Defense can re-set (if that is the transition system that the team uses).
Play can start with a loose ball and shift length can be timed, or coaches can have players line change "on-the-fly." Another option is for players to play offense, defense, then rotate out of the drill (depending on numbers).
Variation #3 (10-20 min): "Soft Lacrosse." Same as above except the nets can be removed (Variation #3A) and two creases can be marked out with pylons or duct tape; with 1 player per team standing in the opponents crease. Trapping the loose ball determines possession of the ball (high density foam) and no stick or body contact is permitted, with a 1 stick length "safety bubble" around each player (a penalty shot from centre-floor should be awarded on any penalty infractions); which allows for this version of the sport to be played with no protective equipment.
Players are only allowed to carry the ball for 5 seconds (or they lose possession signalled by a referee's whistle) and goals are scored when the player in the crease catches a pass (that player comes out and the passer goes in); there must be at least one pass caught before passing into the crease.
If 3x3 nets are available, another option is play with an empty net (Variation #3B). Play then commences as 3 vs. 3 (or more depending on space), using the same rules and no goalie; with players having to shoot the ball into the open net to score a goal.
Variation #4 (10-20 min): "Motion Offense Game." Play a "motion offense game" up to 20. Teams try to connect on as many give & go's, off-ball cuts, on-ball down-picks or on-ball seals as possible, and if-when they get a quality shot off, a point gets added to their score. If the shot is a goal, that team is awarded 2 points to their total score.
Variation #5 (10-20 min): "Pass Over The Line Rule." Same as the above variations except if a player runs the ball over a real or imaginary "clearing-line," instead of passing it over, the other team should be awarded possession of the ball by the coach.
Variation #6 (10-20 min): "5-Step Rule." Same as the above variations except if a player takes more than 5 steps, the other team should be awarded possession of the ball by the coach. This rule could also be applied to a full floor version of Variation #2, similar to Ultimate Frisbee ("Ultimate Lacrosse").
Variation #7 (10-20 min): "Everyone Touch Rule." Same as the above variations except all players on the team need to "touch" the ball (i.e. receive a pass or scoop a loose ball) before a goal can be scored.
Variation #8 (10-20 min): "Consecutive Pass Game." This game goes up to 100. Teams string together as many passes as they want, and if/when they get a quality shot off, that number of passes gets added to their score. If the shot is a goal, that team is awarded 2x their consecutive pass total.
Variation #9 (10-20 min): "Defensive Stops Vs. Quality Shots." Coaches score a game between the 2 teams (10-20 seconds on the shot-clock), up to 20, defensive stops and quality shots both count for 1 point; goals count for 2 points.
Variation #10 (10-20 min): "Pick & Roll Game." Play a "pick & roll game" up to 20 (Variation #10A). Teams try to connect on as many pick & rolls as possible and if/when they get a quality shot off, a point gets added to their score. If the shot is a goal, that team is awarded 2 points to their total. The defense can be given a half point for a successful defense, and a full point if they clear the zone (the assumption is teams are using the Offense-Defense transition system). This same concept could also be used for seal & rolls that create quality shots or not (Variation #10B).
