Defense Drill #12B: Continuous On-Ball 2 Vs. 2
INTERMEDIATE
- Start with an offensive and defensive player stationed at the crease position and shooter position (or mid-boards), on the bench-side (Variation #1 - 7 min) or far-side of the floor (Variation #2 - 7 min). All other offensive players are on their respective benches, with extra defenders standing near the benches at centre-floor (if playing the Offense-Defense transition system), or all players coming off the bench and offensive players becoming the defensive players the next time through the drill (if playing the Two-Way transition system).
- Players should be permitted a maximum of 10 seconds to try and create a quality shot on offense, otherwise the coach blows the whistle and they most drop the ball if they still have it. When the defenders pick it up, the offensive players should ride them to try and force a quick turnover (giving them another 10 seconds), otherwise allowing the defenders to breakout along the far-side.
- These two defenders run the ball deep ("in two's"), then pass the ball to one of the two offensive players that come off the bench in the far-end. These defenders then perform a 90 degree change and sprint back into the defensive lines. Offensive players can either perform a short change (Variation A) or a long change (Variation B).
- Variation #3 (7 min): "Defensive Stops Vs. Quality Shots." Coaches score a game between the two teams, up to 20, defensive stops and quality shots both count for 1 point; goals count for 2 points.
- Variation #4 (7 min): "Game To 7." To add competition, play a game of lefty’s versus righty’s up to 7 goals (lefty offense team playing against the righty offense team), with the losing team doing push-ups, sit-ups, planks, body weight squats, sprints, etc. Furthermore, coaches can make it so 2 goals can be tallied on "bounce shots" if they feel like that particular skill is worthy of emphasis.
