Defense Drill #12A: 2 Vs. 2 On-Ball (High/Low “Walling”)
INTERMEDIATE
- Demo (1 min): Pick-And-Roll-Game - "High/Low," Weak-Side, Strong-Side
-
- *Variation #1 (15 min): "2 Vs. 2." Start with an offensive player at the crease ("low") and shooter ("high") positions, with 2 defenders stationed in top-side defensive positioning ("the wall"), in one or both ends of the floor. Make sure that each end has an even mix of both right and left-handed players.
-
- Coaches can have players turn their "sticks upside-down" the first couple of reps (Variation #1A) to promote staying balanced and in position (no "stick-swinging"); advancing to holding sticks normally and discussing the role of stick-checking (Variation #1B).
Offensive players start with a ball (passed in from coach), attempting to get a quality shot by continuously picking, sealing and/or cycling for each other, trying to create "separation" on-ball by keeping their feet moving.
Allow 10 seconds max for players to make a play. Continue the play if possible after a shot (attack rebounds), at the discretion of the coaches whistle.
Right-handed players go against left-handed players ("proper defensive side"), with offensive players doing the drill, then going to defense; defensive players exiting the drill. Bring all of the lefty’s or righty’s into opposite ends after 5-10 minutes to practice “cross-handed” defending.
Variation #2 (15 min): "3 vs. 3." Same as the above variations except advance to 3 vs. 3, with an offensive player at the crease ("low"), the shooter ("high") and the "middle" positions, with 3 defenders stationed in top-side defensive positioning, in one or both ends of the floor. Discuss the importance (and communication) of the "middle defender," with defenders playing "the wall." Coaches should consider removing the ball for inexperienced defenders that they are teaching this concept to for the first time, with offensive players moving around forcing the defenders to switch; advance to perhaps using a basketball and eventually a lacrosse ball.
Variation #3 (15 min): "Defensive Stops Vs. Quality Shots." Coaches score a game between the 2 teams (5-10 seconds on the shot-clock), up to 20, defensive stops and quality shots both count for 1 point; goals count for 2 points.
Variation #4 (15 min): "Game To 7." To add competition, play a game of lefty’s versus righty’s up to 7 goals (lefty's playing defense against the righty's and vice-versa), with the losing team doing push-ups, sit-ups, planks, body weight squats, sprints, etc. Furthermore, coaches can make it so 2 goals can be tallied on "bounce shots" if they feel like that particular skill is worthy of emphasis.
