Transition Drill #9B: 4-On-3 Into 3-On-2
ADVANCED
- Divide players into two teams (wearing pinnies) composed of an equal number of lefty's & righty's, with lines of players on their proper floor side from both teams spread evenly, in both ends. One end starts with 4 players from one team (2 lefty/2 righty) in a box formation in their defensive zone, whereas the opposite end starts 3 players (2 Lefty/1 Righty for example) in a triangle formation at centre-floor.
- Variation #1 (10 min): "Down & Back." The coach starts by sending a pass or loose ball into the defensive zone on the 4 player end of the drill. These players run a 4-on-3 fast-break against the 3 defenders at centre. Ideally they finish with a shot, at which point the furthest lefty & righty from the play (communicated) should fall back into an I-formation and defend a 3-on-2 against the 3 defenders that just defended against them (coach or goalie passes a new ball into play).
- The next rep of the drill should also see 4 players start in the opposite end of the floor, with 3 players in the end that had previously started with 4. (Draw Diagram)
Variation #2 (10 min): "No Drops/No Misses Game." For every ball that is dropped and/or misses the net during the drill players will have to sprint from one side-board (or end-board) to the other. For every goal that is scored, one sprint is removed from the total, with goalies having to run if the players keep their sprint total at or below zero.
