Transition Drill #9A: 3-On-2 Into 2-On-1
ADVANCED
- Divide players equally into three lines, two outside lanes and one "inside lane," behind goal-line-extended in one end of the floor.
- Variation #1 (15 min): "Down & Back." Start with two defenders in the I-formation standing near centre floor, and the balls in the middle line. The first players in the two outside lines run hard to get ahead of the play, with the first player in the inside line acting as a trailer, but also keeping up with the play.
- After the 3-on-2 the closest player to the rag-line runs back on defense, as a coach sends a pass into the 2 players who were formerly on defense but now run down on a 2-on-1 against the player who ran back to defend this reverse transition.
- The other two players who were formerly on offense now run up to centre-floor to defend against the next 3-on-2. (Draw Diagram)
Variation #2 (15 min): "No Drops/No Misses Game." For every ball that is dropped and/or misses the net during the drill players will have to sprint from one side-board (or end-board) to the other. For every goal that is scored, one sprint is removed from the total, with goalies having to run if the players keep their sprint total at or below zero.
