Transition Drill #4B: Multiple Player Out & Ups (“Slow Break”)
INTERMEDIATE
- Start with 2 lines of players, on their proper floor sides, on both sides of the crease, at one end of the floor; with the line on the far-side from the bench having balls.
- Variation #1A (7 min): "Support Passes." Two players from the far-side line step into the drill at the crease and shooter positions; the crease outlet player has the ball. One player from the bench-side line also steps into the drill, standing in the middle ("emergency outlet"). The player with the ball rolls it into the goalie and all 3 players run to their designated breakout spots, button hooking back to the ball once they are there.
- The goalie passes the ball to the middle outlet, who then passes the ball to the closest player on the far-side, who then passes to the player furthest ahead of the play for a breakaway. Players should alternate roles each time through the drill, with the ball always being passed "away from the bench" after the first pass from the goalie.
Variation #1B (7 min): "Hit The Trailer." Another variation of this drill would be for the player who receives the "head-player pass" to curl out at the mid-boards and hit one of the trailers with a pass, for a shot.
Variation #1C (7 min): "Pick & Roll." Another variation of this drill would be to head-player pass the ball to the far-side and then execute an on-ball pick & roll, with the ball carrier making a pass to the trailer after coming over the pick and the trailer passing it to the roller for a shot "in-tight" on the goalie.
Variation #2 & #3 (10 min): "4 & 5 Player Spacing." Advance to 4 and then 5 players participating at once, with 2 (or 3) players in one line and 2 players in the other. Ideally players should pass away from the bench-side, passing the ball deep on the far-side, then across the floor to a trailer.
All players should time their cuts and run their Lanes properly, slowing up where necessary; pass patterns can also be mixed up at the coaches discretion. (Draw Diagram).
Variation #4 (7 min): "Pressure." Another variation of the above drills would be for coaches (or volunteer defenders) to apply varying amounts of pressure to the players who are trying to breakout of the defensive zone. If players are being utilized to apply pressure, they should first play defense, then breakout of the zone the next rep, with new defenders coming into the drill each rep.
Variation #5 (7 min): "Scrambled." This variation could be applied to any of the above variations, whereby players must start on a different side of the floor each time through the drill (beginning with two mixed lines of lefts and rights), ultimately leaving an undetermined number of players on their wrong floor-side; having to identify the situation and still get off a quality shot.
Variation #6 (7 min): "No Drops/No Misses Game." For every ball that is dropped and/or misses the net during the drill players will have to sprint from one side-board (or end-board) to the other. For every goal that is scored, one sprint is removed from the total, with goalies having to run if the players keep their sprint total at or below zero.
Variation #7 (7 min): "Add Defenders." Same as the above variations except two defenders (or coaches) are added in the I-formation (Variation #7A), three defenders are added in either a 1-Up/2-Back or 2 Back/1-Up Triangle (Variation #7B), or 4 defenders are added in a Box. If players are acting as defenders, whoever shoots the ball is out of the drill and the remaining players defend against the next 3-on-2, 4-on-3 or 5-on-4 fast-break.
