Transition Drill #2D: Dougie T’s “Fast Break Variation”
INTERMEDIATE
- Players start at centre-floor, with a line of "lefty's" and a line of "righty's" on their proper-floor side, facing the opposite side-boards; balls starting in the line facing the side-boards on the far-side (switching directions halfway through the drill).
- Variation #1 (10 min): "Imaginary 3-On-2." The first player in the line facing the far-side boards rolls a ball against the side-boards and then breaks down the floor in the "outside lane," with the first player in the opposite line also taking off running in the outside lane on the opposite side of the floor.
- The second player in the far-side line corrals the loose ball as it bounces off of the boards and then breaks towards the "inside lane" dumping a pass to either player in the outside lane once they get to the prime scoring area.
Play should finish with a quality shot, with all players returning to their original line after the shot (along the side-boards), doing their best to avoid the participants now in the drill behind them (2-3 seconds between reps).
Players are encouraged to switch responsibilities the next time through the drill (i.e. passer becomes receiver, and vice-versa).
Variation #2 (10 min): "Force The Play." A coach (or volunteer defender) can also stand at the point position and force the pass, or hitch and fall back to the "receiver;" with the ball carrier having to make the right decision of whether to shoot or pass.
Variation #3 (10 min): "Game To 7." To add competition, play a game of lefty’s versus righty’s up to 7 goals, losing team does push-ups, sit-ups, body weight squats, sprints, etc.
Variation #4 (10 min): "No Drops/No Misses Game." For every ball that is dropped and/or misses the net during the drill players will have to sprint from one side-board (or end-board) to the other. For every goal that is scored, one sprint is removed from the total, with goalies having to run if the players keep their sprint total at or below zero.
Variation #5 (10 min): "Scrambled." This variation could be applied to any of the above variations whereby players must start on a different side of the floor each time through the drill (with two mixed lines of lefts and rights), ultimately leaving an undetermined number of players on their wrong floor-side; having to identify the situation and still get off a quality shot.
