Transition Drill #2C: Dougie T’s LB With A “Fast-Break Pass”
INTERMEDIATE
- Demo (1 min): Fast-Break – "Carry Until Pressured," Same-Handed (North-South)
- Players start in two lines arranged as a line of "lefty's" and a line of "righty's" at centre-floor, facing the same side-boards but running in opposite directions in terms of drill orientation.
- Variation #1 (10 min): "Same-Side Pass." The first player in each line ("the receiver") rolls a ball off of the side-boards then breaks along the boards ("outside lane") on their proper floor side.
- The second player in each line ("the passer") corrals the loose ball as it bounces off of the boards and then breaks towards the "inside lane" dumping a pass to the player in the outside lane once they get to the prime scoring area (which is the rule on a fast-break - "carry until pressured"). For beginners, a pylon (or stick) may be used as a marker for where players should be preparing to pass from.
The "passer" follows up the play for a potential rebound, with both players returning to their original line after the shot, doing their best to avoid the participants now in the drill behind them (2-3 seconds between reps).
Players are encouraged to switch responsibilities the next time through the drill (i.e. passer becomes receiver, and vice-versa).
Variation #2 (10 min): "Force The Play." A coach (or volunteer defender) can also stand at the point position and force the pass, or hitch and fall back to the "receiver;" with the ball carrier having to make the right decision of whether to shoot or pass.
Variation #3 (10 min): "Game To 7." To add competition, play a game of lefty’s versus righty’s up to 7 goals, losing team does push-ups, sit-ups, body weight squats, sprints, etc.
Variation #4 (10 min): "No Drops/No Misses Game." For every ball that is dropped and/or misses the net during the drill players will have to sprint from one side-board (or end-board) to the other. For every goal that is scored, one sprint is removed from the total, with goalies having to run if the players keep their sprint total at or below zero.
Variation #5 (10 min): "Scrambled." This variation could be applied to any of the above variations whereby players must start on a different side of the floor each time through the drill (with two mixed lines of lefts and rights), ultimately leaving an undetermined number of players on their wrong floor-side; having to identify the situation and still get off a quality shot.
Variation #6 (10 min): "Long Pass." This variation could be applied to any of the above variations whereby after obtaining the loose ball, the second player in each line curls out and makes a long pass to the 1st player in the opposite line, who is headed on a breakaway in the far-end.
For this variation to work effectively, both lines needs to roll the loose ball off the boards at the same time; players on the breakaway should also stay wide until they have made eye contact with the passer.
