Transition Drill #11C: Chad’s Honest 3-On-2 Continuous
ADVANCED (15 MIN)
- Players should be divided equally on both benches, with all of the lefty defense and righty offense on one bench, and all of the righty defense and lefty offense on the other (such that offensive players come onto the floor on their proper floor side).
- Begin with two "defenders" and one "offensive player" at centre-floor (on their proper floor sides), with 2 opposite handed defenders in the defensive zone in an “I” formation ready to fall back against a 3-on-2 odd-player opportunity. To start the drill one offensive player from the team with two defenders on defense needs to start in a chase position, line changing after they play their defense. From then on forth it is essentially 3 vs. 3, until the coach blows the whistle (5 seconds max).
- Defenders play defense, have a fast-break and then are required to line change. Offensive players play offense, chase the play back to defense, then change (no exceptions). Teams should also switch benches (halfway through the drill), doing a short change and a long change.
Once a shot is taken, there is a turnover, or the offense has timed out, the coach blows the whistle and either a coach or the goalie passes a ball to their team who immediately takes off on a fast break. No cheating is allowed on the line changes, and any illegal substitution penalties should result in extra sprints at the end of the drill. (Draw Diagram)
Play resumes continually in this manner for an allotted amount of time, or sometimes until one team scores a certain amount of goals against the other (i.e. game up to 7). Coaches may also choose to track turnovers and quality shots.
