Transition Drill #11B: Continuous 3-On-2’s (With A Chaser)
ADVANCED (10 MIN)
- Players should be divided equally on both benches, or offense can be on one bench with the defense on the other (for competition); or lefty's can be on one bench with righty's on another. Note: this drill can also be run with lines of lefty's on one side and righty's on the other (at centre-floor).
- Begin with 3 players at centre-floor (on their proper floor sides) with 2 players in the defensive zone in an “I” formation ready to fall back against a 3-on-2 odd-player opportunity. Play starts once the ball-carrier runs past the chosen bench-door, at which point a “chaser” then comes off and tries to bring the 3-on-2 back to even strength. If the chaser is successful, players are allowed to play 3 vs. 3 until the coach blows the whistle (5 seconds max).
- Once a shot is taken or there is a turnover, either the players who were on defense or the chaser picks up the loose ball, otherwise receives a pass from a coach (or goalie) and they all run the length of the floor on 3-on-2 in the other direction (2 defenders comes off of the opposite bench early; then the chaser). All players should run hard to the bench. (Draw Diagram)
- Play resumes continually in this manner for an allotted amount of time, or sometimes until one team scores a certain amount of goals against the other (i.e. game up to 7).
