5-On-4 Box Play #4A (Skip Pass & Cut) & Play #4B (Skip Pass & Fill)
BEGINNER POWER PLAYS
*4A. Skip Pass - "Cut"
- The point player skip passes the ball to the opposite-handed crease player, initiating the play.
- At the exact same time that the pass is being released, the strong-side shooter cuts the middle and receives a pass (Option #1), taking the shot.
- The passer (crease player) must be careful to make at least a 60-40 pass, otherwise if the cutter is covered, look to option number 2 (see bottom diagram).
*4B. Skip Pass - "Fill"
- The point player skip passes the ball to the opposite-handed crease player, initiating the play.
- At the same time that the pass is being released, the strong-side shooter cuts the middle (receiving a pass only if wide open).
- The point player backpedals toward the shooter position (filling) and receives the give-and-go pass for a shot (Option #2).
- If neither option presents a quality shot, the point player can move back to the point position, the crease player can fill the shooter position and the cutter can go to the crease position.
- Variation: The point player can also cut the middle instead of the strong-side shooter, with the shooter filling into the point position and the strong-side crease player filling into the shooter position.
- *Note: This play also works well against a Diamond Defense
