Goaltending Drill #4B: Double Breakaway Competition
INTERMEDIATE
- Have players line up in two teams, at centre-floor, with one team lined up facing the goalie at one end, and the other team facing the opposite end. Teams are usually divided up as either lefty’s versus righty’s (if numbers are even), or otherwise as offensive players versus defensive players.
- Variation #1 (10 min): "Double Breakaway." Put all of the balls in a pile at centre-floor; players do a breakaway at one end, come back and pick a loose ball up at centre and do a breakaway at the other end (cardio emphasis). To prove a point, coaches should track the success rate of the first breakaway shot vs. the second breakaway shot, which is likely to be less due to fatigue.
- The next player in each line can't go until the original player has returned to their line at centre. Teams can compete against each other, playing a game up to 7 goals, with the losing team doing extra sprints.
- Variation #2 (10 min): "Hit The Net Game." For every ball that misses the net during the drill (until everyone has shot once) players have to sprint from one side-board (or end-board) to the other; starting from zero each time after everyone has shot.
