Goaltending Drill #1: Goalie “Stance” & “Rebound Control”
BEGINNER
- Whenever coaches (or volunteers) have the time or have an excess of goalies (3 or more) with a net unoccupied, they should consider taking the opportunity to shoot on the goalies.
- Choose more experienced coaches with good stick skills, if possible. For coaches lacking experience, they may also choose to throw the ball with their hand instead of using a stick.
- Make sure to hit the goalie in the chest or leg pads on the first couple of shots (also consider using tennis balls with a beginner goalie).
*Variation #1A (5 min): "Corner Specific." Shoot on the goalie from different angles around the perimeter. In this variation the coach tells the goalie which corner they will be shooting at (5-10 shots per corner) prior to starting the drill and when switching between chosen corners (emphasize good goaltending technique).
*Variation #1B (5 min): "Different Angles." Shoot on the goalie from different angles (and release points) around the perimeter, switching to inside shots after shooting a few shots from each of the 5 different angles. Instruct goalies to trap and scoop any rebounds that land close by the front of the crease (two-handed). Goalies should then bring the ball up into the throwing position ready to transition the ball as quickly as possible, passing the ball back to the coach.
Variation #1C (5 min): "Mix Release Points." Same as the above variations except coaches take a certain type of shot: overhand, side-arm, underhand or bounce shots.
*Variation #1D (2 min): "Goalie Trap & Scoop." Miss the net on purpose the odd time, hitting the ball off the glass and off the back of the net, or otherwise roll the ball somewhere near the crease. Have goalies reach for loose balls outside of the crease (behind or in front of the net), being sure to keep at least one foot in the crease while trying to obtain the ball (in order to avoid a “back in” violation); also to use the length of the stick and reach with “two hands.” Goalies should then bring the ball up into the throwing position ready to transition the ball as quickly as possible, passing the ball back to the coach (who moves around acting like an outlet pass).
*Variation #2 (5 min): "Two Shooters." Shoot on the goalie from different angles around the perimeter, with two coaches (or volunteers) swinging the ball from east-west. Switch to inside shots (later one shooter outside and one shooter inside) after shooting a few shots from each of the 5 different angles.
Instruct goalies to "trap and scoop" any rebounds that land close by the front of the crease. Goalies should then bring the ball up into the throwing position ready to transition the ball as quickly as possible, passing the ball back to a coach (who moves around acting like an outlet pass).
*Variation #3 (2 min): "Two Shooters - Miss The Net." Shoot on the goalie from different angles around the perimeter, with two coaches (or volunteers) swinging the ball from east-west. Switch to inside shots (later one shooter outside and one shooter inside) after shooting a few shots from each of the 5 different angles. Miss the net on purpose the odd time, hitting the ball off the "glass" and off the back of the net (could also pass to other coach off end-boards). Instruct goalies to "trap and scoop" any rebounds that land close by the front of the crease, while constantly tracking the rebounds. Goalies should then bring the ball up into the throwing position ready to transition the ball as quickly as possible, passing the ball back to a coach.
Variation #4 (5 min): "No Goalie Stick." Any of the variations above can also be done with the goalie having no stick, instead working on using their body more than they might otherwise (great for goalies lacking mobility). Note: This variation may be used for any drill deemed appropriate throughout this website.
*Most common error = goalies not actively pursuing rebounds with their stick
