Offense Drill #1A: “Give & Go’s” (Point & Shooter)
- Demo (1 min): Popping Out, Give & Go ("Pass & Cut")
- Have players lined up a few steps back from the point position, with balls.
- *Variation #1 (15 min): "Pass To Coach." The ball carrier passes to either the weak-side shooter position (Variation #1A), or the strong-side shooter position (Variation #1B), and then cuts the middle receiving a give-and-go pass for a shot.
- *Variation #2 (15 min): "Player At The Shooter." Same as the above variation except players are passers at the shooter positions (proper floor side) after taking their turn at the point position; alternating lines each time through the drill.
- Variation #3 (15 min): "Dummy Defenders." Is the same as variation #2 except there is a volunteer defender playing “soft” defense at the point position; simulating the the battle required to get to the middle. There can also be another volunteer defender "window washing" the passer at the shooter position. The coach can also request that defenders force the cutter to one side or the other (perhaps forcing players to catch a lead pass over their inside shoulder if advanced).
- Another option instead of a volunteer defender is for the first player in the line to play defense, later taking their turn on offense (after the other side takes their turn), switching to the shooter line after they shoot; and vice-versa.
Variation #4 (20 min): "Picks & Seals." This drill set-up can also be useful for teaching picks & seals, first against an imaginary defender and then against a "dummy" defender. The point player passes to the same-handed shooter and picks for the shooter who comes around and shoots (Variation #4A), or passes to the roller (Variation #4B). Otherwise, the point player passes to the same-handed shooter and seals for the shooter, who comes around and shoots (Variation #4C), or passes to the roller (Variation #4D).
- *Most common error = players not cutting toward their proper side ("banana curl") when going through the middle
