Transition Drill #8C: 2-On-1 & 3-On-2 Mash Ups
ADVANCED
- Start with 2 (or three) lines of players at the restraining-line (near or far), with players randomly distributed throughout the offensive lines instead of starting on their proper floor-side (facing one or both directions). All lines should eventually have a chance to start with balls, or a coach can send a pass to a different line each time.
- A volunteer defender (or two) starts on the restraining-line, split between both offensive lines. Following the first rep through the drill, the last offensive player to touch the ball is on defense, with the other offensive player(s) running out of the drill along the side-boards.
- Variation #1 (20 min): "2-On-1 Mash Up." Start with the defensive player near centre-floor (Variation #1A), or have the defender run into the play from the bench (Variation #1B). Players are then forced to read the situation and execute the 2-on-1 with one or both players beginning on their wrong floor side (which happens quite often in games).
- In terms of how to execute, if one player is on their wrong floor-side to start, it is imperative to get that player the ball in the middle lane, with the player on their proper floor-side running hard to get ahead of the play (in the outside lane); creating a north-south 2-on-1 (See Offense Drill #8 - Variation #2). If both players are on their wrong-side, they need to criss-cross as early as possible to get both players onto their proper floor-sides. If not possible, they can also try to criss-cross closer to the net, with the off-ball player attempting to seal the defender and the ball carrier coming overtop for a shot.
Variation #2 (20 min): "3-On-2 Mash Up." Start with defensive players near centre-floor in the I-formation (Variation #2A), or have defenders run into the I-formation from the bench (Variation #2B). A third line of offensive players is also added between the two outside lines. Players are then forced to read the situation and execute the 3-on-2 with one or two players beginning on their wrong-floor-side (which happens quite often in games).
In terms of how to execute, if both players in the outside lanes are on their wrong floor-side they should attempt to criss-cross to get everyone on their proper floor-side.If a player is on their wrong-floor side in the outside lane, they should attempt to seal the high defender for the ball carrier and create a north-south 2-on-1 for the remaining 2 offensive players. Otherwise, the ball can be passed to the player on their wrong floor-side with the player in the middle lane setting an off-ball down-pick for the player on their proper floor-side in the outside lane.
Variation #3 (20 min): "Progressively Closer/Further Away." Same as Variations #1 & #2 except all players start progressively closer to (Variation #3A), or further from (Variation #3B), the net each time through the drill.
By moving players closer they have to make quicker decisions, and by moving them further back into the defensive zone, it adds more of a cardio element and replicates the most prevalent scenario in games.
Variation #4 (20 min): "With A Chaser." Same as the above variations except an extra defender starts 3-5 metres behind the play and chases the offensive players in an attempt to bring the play back to even-strength.
The "chaser" should alternate between coming from the line of "lefty's" and the line of "righty's" each rep through the drill; with all players taking at least one turn chasing.
