Offense Drill #8: Offensive Zone “2-On-1’s”
INTERMEDIATE
- Demo (1 min): Cat & Mouse, Following The Slide
- Variation #1 (5 min): "East-West 2-On-1" (Balls High). Start in one or both ends, with a line of offensive players at each shooter position (proper floor sides), one line with balls and one without, with a defensive player from the line without balls in the middle. After every player has gone twice, switch to starting the balls on the other side (Variation #1A).
- The player with the ball carries it toward the net (on the coaches whistle) and either gets a quality shot or successfully passes to the opposite side for a quality shot; the defender does their best to give up a low percentage shot (2 passes max).
- After each rep, the shooter plays defense and the defensive player goes to the back of the shooter line on their proper floor side.
- Another more advanced and high intensity variation, is to start with a pile of balls behind the net. After the 2-on-1, the player who shoots, goes behind the net and scoops a loose ball, sending a pass to either line of shooters; the player who never shot plays defense (Variation #1B).
Variation #2 (5 min): "North-South 2-On-1" With Balls High. Start in one or both ends, with a line of offensive players at the crease and shooter positions, and a defensive player split between the two, on the same-side of the floor; lax or tennis balls start with the players in the shooter lines.
On the coaches whistle players execute either a shot or pass (2 passes max). Ideally, the defender is able to take away the top-side of the shooter (standing in the shooting lane) and still be able to recover to the crease if the pass is made.
After each rep, the shooter plays defense, the defensive player enters the crease line; the crease player moves up to the shooter line.
Variation #3 (5 min): "East-West 2-On-1" With Balls Low. Start in one or both ends, with a line of offensive players at each crease position (proper floor sides), one line with balls and one without, with a defensive player from the line without balls in the middle. After every player has gone twice, switch everything to the other side.
The player with the ball comes out of the corner with the ball (on the coaches whistle) and either gets a quality shot or successfully passes to the opposite side for a quality shot (2 passes max); the defender does their best to give up a low percentage shot.
After each rep, the player who shot plays defense and the defensive player enters the crease line on their proper floor side.
Variation #4 (5 min): "North-South 2-On-1" With Balls Low. Start in one or both ends, with a line of offensive players at the crease and shooter positions, and a defensive player split between the two on the same-side of the floor.
On the coaches whistle players execute either a shot or pass (2 passes max), balls starting with the players in the crease lines. Ideally the defender is able to take away the angle of the crease player and recover to the top-side of the shooter (standing in the shooting lane) if the pass is made.
After each rep, the shooter plays defense, the defensive player enters the crease line; the crease player moves up to the shooter line.
Variation #5 (5 min): "Game To 7." To add competition, play a game of lefty’s versus righty’s up to 7 goals, losing team does push-ups, sit-ups, body weight squats, sprints, etc.
Variation #6 (5 min): "No Drops/No Misses Game." For every ball that is dropped and/or misses the net during the drill players will have to sprint from one side-board (or end-board) to the other. For every goal that is scored, one sprint is removed from the total, with goalies having to run if the players keep their sprint total at or below zero.
Variation #7 (5 min): "No Look Passes." Same as the above variations except have players practice "no look" passing, where they pass to the intended player while looking at the goalie or another player.
