Warm-Up Drill #8: CP’s “Circling” Warm-Up
INTERMEDIATE
- Start with players in pairs, in one or both ends of floor. Spread pairings evenly across the designated area, with players 5-10 metres apart.
- Variation #1 (2 min): "One Ball." With one ball per pairing, have players circle ("side shuffling") clockwise for one minute and then counter-clockwise for another minute, passing the ball back and forth (Variation #1A). Another option is to perform the same task using loose balls (Variation #1B). A more remedial variation would be for just one player to be circling around the other (who is stationary), especially if this a large discrepancy in skill level.
- Variation #2 (2 min): "Two Balls." Same as the above variation except there are now two balls per pairing. Coaches should be sure to have plenty of balls on hand to substitute in for errant passes.
- Variation #3 (2 min): "Quick Sticks." Same as above except players utilize the quick stick technique.
- Variation #4 (2 min): "Flip Passes." Same as above except players utilize the "flip pass" technique.
- Variation #5 (2 min): "Consecutive Catches Game." Same as the above variations of the drill except have players keep track of how many times in a row their pairing goes through the drill without a dropped ball. If a ball is dropped, that pairing must start their count over from zero.
- Variation #6 (2 min): "No Drops Game." For every ball that is dropped during the drill players will have to sprint from one side-board (or end-board) to the other.
- Variation #7 (2 min): "Add A Defender." A 3rd player can join each pairing and stand stationary in the middle trying to knock down passes, as the two offensive players circle around the defender. The rotation through the drill can be switch the defender every 30 seconds (Variation #7A), or switch any time there is a missed pass, with the last person to touch the ball becomes the defender (Variation #7B).
