Warm-Up Drill #7B: 3 Player Shuttle (Lead Passing)
INTERMEDIATE
- Arrange players into groups of 3, in a straight line, with the outside players approximately 15 metres apart and a third player in the middle. Switch who is in the middle every 30 seconds at the sound of the coaches whistle, with each player getting two turns in the middle.
- Variation #6 (5 min): "Lead Pass." The "middle player" runs around the "outside players" continuously for 30 seconds, with their stick "leading" in front of them as they run around the outside players (lefty's run clockwise, righty's run counter-clockwise).
- The player in the middle receives a "lead pass" after running around the outside player. After receiving the pass, the middle player passes it back to the same player who passed it to them, who then passes the ball to the other outside player; who eventually makes the next lead pass.
- The pass back to the middle player should be there as soon as they turn the corner, with the middle player having their stick beside their ear (“the box”) for a target. The outside passers need to anticipate where the player will be and pass it to a spot/area.
- Intermediate players should be encouraged to keep their feet moving while passing and advanced players to mix up their release points.
Variation #7 (5 min): "Figure-8." Same protocol as above except the middle player runs a continuous figure-8 around the two stationary outside players; receiving one pass that mimics a lead pass and the other mimicking an adjacent pass (with their stick trailing behind them instead of leading in front of them). Switch which direction the middle player takes around the outside players the second turn through the drill, which allows for the passers to practice both the lead and adjacent pass, respectively.
Variation #8 (5 min): "Consecutive Catches Game." Same as the variations above except have players keep track of how many times in a row their group goes through the drill without a dropped ball. If a ball is dropped, that group must start their count over from zero. After the drill, coaches determine which group had the highest consecutive catching streak, with the other groups possibly having some sort of consequence for losing the game.
