Transition Drill #6D: Championship Drill (Run In Two’s)
ADVANCED
- Players should be divided equally on both benches, with two players on the floor (in one end) near the far-side mid-board/crease and restraining-line/shooter positions to begin the drill (balls should be in a pile in the corner). (Draw Diagram)
- Variation #1 (10 min): "Run In Two's." The drill starts with the player at the crease position passing the ball up to a player near the restraining-line (replicating an outlet pass) and then "running in two's" deep into the other end. The player with the ball carries it to the mid-boards, at which point a player should leave the bench and cut through the middle, in a “bench assist” trailer scenario. This player receives a pass from the player at the mid-boards (Variation #1A), takes a shot, then goes to the corner, gets a loose ball, and again passes it up to the player near the restraining-line (who had just run up the floor as a support after making the outlet pass). The player who ran the ball deep to the mid-boards also has the option to pass the ball to the support player once they reach the offensive zone, and this player can pass to the player coming off the bench instead (Variation #1B).
The player at the mid boards then runs hard to the opposite bench (as if finishing a 90° line change after a successful breakout); or players can run to the same bench and the coach can switch the players on each bench halfway through the drill.
This cycle is repeated over and over until every player has a rep in both ends; goalies should switch ends halfway through the drill. Players coming off of the bench on their "wrong floor side" should practice drifting once they've caught the pass.
Variation #2 (10 min): "Game To 7." To add competition, play a game of lefty’s versus righty’s up to 7 goals, losing team does push-ups, sit-ups, body weight squats, sprints, etc.
Variation #3 (10 min): "No Drops/No Misses Game." For every ball that is dropped and/or misses the net during the drill players will have to sprint from one side-board (or end-board) to the other. For every goal that is scored, one sprint is removed from the total, with goalies having to run if the players keep their sprint total at or below zero.
