Stickwork Drill #7B: Blaze’s Footwork & Quick Shooting
INTERMEDIATE
- Start with lines of lefty's & righty's on their proper floor side, standing a few metres back from the shooter positions; in one or both ends of the floor. Pylons should be placed at both shooter positions and the point position; with the drill orientation alternating from one side to the other.
- Variation #1 (10 min): "Shooter & Point Soft Spot." One player from one of the lines starts between the two pylons on their side of the floor (shooter & point). This player runs forward from the shooter to the point pylon (as close as possible without touching), and then backpedals back to the shooter position; repetitively. Other options are to figure-8 through the pylons, switching directions each rep through the drill; or to go clockwise or counter-counter clockwise around both pylons.
- After approximately 10 seconds the coach (or player in the opposite line) passes the ball to the player who, attempts to gather their balance and get off a quality shot as quickly as possible (Variation #1A).
- The other option is for coaches to send numerous passes to the player in the drill, with the player taking multiple shots, for upwards of 20 seconds (Variation #1B).
- It is also possible to have two players in the drill at once, one from each side, starting at staggered intervals; shooting at different times based on the passes from the coaches. Players can also be asked to take certain types of shots, whether overhand, side-arm, underhand, twisters, bounce shots, or a mix of different release points.
- Variation #2 (10 min): "Back Door Cut & Mid Board Soft Spot." Same as the above variation except pylons are now halfway between the shooter and crease position (level with mid-boards), as well as at the top of the crease (45 degrees off the goalpost), with players running forward to the crease pylon and backpedaling back to the mid-board pylon.
