Stickwork Drill #5C: “Sweep” Shot
INTERMEDIATE
- Arrange players into two lines at the mid-boards or shooter position, on one side of the floor, in one or both ends of the floor. Whichever hand of players are on their proper floor side are on offense, and those that are on their wrong floor side are on defense.
- Variation #1 (7 min): "Soft Pressure." The first player in the offensive line is given a head start, with the first player in the defensive line starting in an open stance. Upon the coaches whistle the offensive player runs east-west in orientation across the middle, and the defender must run with the offensive player applying "soft pressure," building up from 50% speed to 100%. The offensive player practices their sweep shot.
-
- After all players have had 3-4 repetitions at either offense or defense, switch the drill to the opposite side of the floor.
Variation #2 (7 min): "Screen Shot." Same as above except there is a player or coach standing near the middle/shooter position (similar to a defender being sealed) who the defender runs into, as the offender takes a screen shot-on-the-run (east-west), ideally releasing the ball as soon as they step past the screen.
A more remedial variation of this drill would be for one player to start in the middle at the screen, with defenders removed, with lefty offensive players acting as a screen for the righties after they shoot, and vice-versa.
Variation #3 (7 min): "Off Ball Sweep." Same as the above variations, except the offensive player starts without a ball and receives a pass while cutting from off-ball, having to catch & shoot the ball with varying degrees of pressure. The passer can be a coach, or the defender can become the passer after doing their defensive rep, while the offensive player sprints out of the drill.
Variation #4 (7 min): "Mix Release Points." Same as the above variations except coaches instruct players to take a certain type of shot: overhand, side-arm, underhand, cripplers or bounce shots.
Variation #5 (7 min): "React To The Rebound." Same as the variations above except after the player takes their shot both players are required to "react to the rebound." If the goalie corrals the rebound, the shooter "reacts back." Otherwise, both players fight for the loose ball with the defender attempting to clear the defensive zone if they get it; the offensive player having 5 seconds max to finish the play if they get it.
Variation #6 (7 min): "No Drops/No Misses Game." For every ball that is dropped and/or misses the net during the drill players will have to sprint from one side-board (or end-board) to the other. For every goal that is scored, one sprint is removed from the total, with goalies having to run if the players keep their sprint total at or below zero.
Variation #7 (10 min): "Game To 7." To add competition, play a game of lefty’s versus righty’s up to 7 goals, with the losing team doing push-ups, sit-ups, planks, body weight squats, sprints, etc. Furthermore, coaches can make it so 2 goals can be tallied on "bounce shots" if they feel like that particular skill is worthy of emphasis.
