9E. Double - "Down-Seal" (Off-Ball)

• An off-ball "double down" seal is when both the point player and shooter on the strong-side (off-ball) seal their checks while the crease player runs high, filling into the shooter position and receiving a skip pass from the on-ball crease player for an open shot (Option #1). 

• The play is triggered with a pass from the weak-side shooter to the weak-side crease player.  Other options for the play include the crease player coming up to the mid-board soft spot for a shot (Option #3), or the "lowest" sealer (closest to the net) rolling to the net (Option #2).

  The player receiving the skip pass needs to already be running high before both seals lock in (anticipate), while the players sealing need to be crafty ("finessing the seal") in order to trap the defenders behind the seal. 

  Variation

  • Variation:  The strong-side crease player can also "trigger" the play by reversing the ball behind the net from crease-to-crease, coming up and overtop of the off-ball double seal with the same options as described above.

9F. Double - "Up-Seal" (Off-Ball)  

• An off-ball "double-up" seal is when both the shooter and then the crease player on the strong-side seal their checks from underneath (pushing them high).  The point player simultaneously does a back-door cut low, receiving a pass for a shot "in tight" on the goalie, perhaps a quick stick (Option #1). 

• The play is triggered with a pass from the weak-side shooter to the weak-side crease player.  Other options for the play include the crease player coming up to the mid-board soft spot for a shot (Option #3), or the "lowest" sealer rolling to the net (Option #2).
