5-On-4 Box Play #9A (“Wheel – Up High”) & Play #9B (“Wheel – Behind The Net”)
INTERMEDIATE POWER PLAYS
9A. Wheel - "Up High"
- The point player passes to the opposite-handed shooter then cuts down the middle and eventually fills the same-handed crease position.
- As this happens, the strong-side crease player fills the shooter position and the same-side shooter fills toward the point position (cycle), receiving a pass from the weak-side shooter ("passer").
- This player either shoots (Option #1), passes to the far-side crease player who tries to find a passing lane for a quick stick (Option #2), or repeats the “cycle” until a quality scoring opportunity presents itself. The weak-side shooter ("passer") may also fake a pass and should always be a threat to take a shot if the opportunity is there.
- Variation: "Wheel" into a strong-side or weak-side "Scissor Picks" after the first or second cycle through the wheel. Other simpler variations include a strong-side down-pick or a weak-side up-pick, with the pass coming from the strong-side shooter; otherwise, to seal the strong-side high defender and carry the ball overtop for a shot.
9B. Wheel - Behind The Net
- Players should begin in a 2-2-1 formation with one player at their wrong-side crease position, in an effort to disguise this set-play. This player then goes behind the net to initiate the play. The lone off-ball player should then fill down from the shooter position to the soft spot.
- The point player then passes to the strong-side shooter and runs through the middle eventually circling the net.
- While this happens, all strong-side players should cycle up: the player behind the net to the crease, the crease player to the shooter, and the shooter to the point.
- When the strong-side shooter gets to the point, this player passes to the weak-side player at the soft spot. By this time, the original point player should be finished circling the net and this player can pass to either player at the crease position (2 Options), which is now overloaded.
