5-On-4 Box Play #8A (“Scissors – On-Ball”) & Play #8B (“Scissors – Cross-Pick”)
INTERMEDIATE POWER PLAYS
8A. Scissors – "On Ball"
- The point player passes to the strong-side shooter, which triggers the play.
- The point player then seals the strong-side crease position, while the same-handed crease player seals the shooter position.
- The shooter (ball carrier) then runs between the two seals and either shoots (Option #1) or passes to the off-ball crease player (Option #2). If no "lane" presents itself between the two seals, the other option is step overtop of a re-seal by the strong-side crease player (Option #3 - not shown in diagram), presenting the same to options of shoot or pass.
- The off-ball shooter may also seal the off-ball high (help) defender, to help this play run effectively.
- Instead of the off-ball shooter sealing the high defender, they do a back-door cut to the crease position, with the crease player up-sealing the low defender. The off-ball shooter (Option #1) ultimately receives a pass from the player running through the "scissors" for a back-door quick stick (Option #2).
8B. Scissors – "Cross Pick" (On-Ball)
- The point player passes to the weak-side shooter, who passes back to the point player triggering the play.
- The weak-side shooter cuts through the middle and cross-picks the strong-side crease position, while the strong-side crease player simultaneously seals the strong-side shooter position; the ball is then quickly passed to the strong-side shooter by the point player.
- The shooter (ball carrier) then runs between the two seals and either shoots (Option #1) or passes to the off-ball crease player (Option #2).
- Variation: The weak-side crease player can also seal the strong-side crease position to create the "scissor" action (being careful to stay out of the crease).
- Variation: This play can also be run off-ball, with the weak side crease player making the pass after receiving it from the weak-side shooter before they cross-pick.
