INTERMEDIATE POWER PLAYS

6A. Dice - "Picking/Waiting"

• The player in the middle should set multiple picks while players on the outside pass the ball around the horn and use the picks set for them in an attempt to set-up a "quality shot" (Option #1).  

• When the ball is swung or skip passed to the weak-side, the middle player should pick anywhere on their proper floor side and time a roll to the net, whereby they can receive a pass from the far-side as they approach the middle of the defense (Option #2).  Option #3 is a pass to the back-door crease player for a quick stick.

• VARIATION

  • Variation: The middle player can also just go and stand at the top of the crease, between the two low defenders, which creates an overload situation at the strong-side crease position; the passer can then either pass to the off-ball crease player with a quick stick (Option #2) or the middle player (Option #1).

• Note:  This play also works well against a Diamond defense. 

6B. Middle Player – "On-Ball Scissors"

• Players should begin in the 2-2-1 formation to disguise this set-play (the strong-side crease player shifts to the middle after the ball comes around the horn on their side), or simply set-up as seen in the diagram. 

• Once the ball is at the point, this player should pass to the same-handed shooter, then pick the same-side crease defender (down-pick).  As the point player passes through the middle, the player in the middle should up-pick for the shooter with the ball, creating a lane for this player to carry the ball through the middle for a shot (Option #1).  If this option is unavailable, the ball carrier should look to the off-ball crease player as a secondary option (Option #2).

• VARIATION

  • Variation:  Another variation of this play is for the weak-side shooter to pass the ball to the strong-side shooter cutting between the picks "off-ball" and receiving a pass.
