5-On-4 Box Play #4E (Up-Pick – On-Ball) & Play #4F (Up & Down Pick)
INTERMEDIATE POWER PLAYS
4E. Up-Pick - "On Ball"
- The point player passes to the opposite-handed shooter, who passes to the same-side crease player. The crease player passes back to the shooter (triggering the play) and simultaneously sets a north-south up-pick at the same-side shooter position.
- The shooter carries the ball down toward the soft spot and either shoots (Option #2), passes to the crease player who rolls to the middle (Option #1), or passes to the off-ball crease player for a quick stick shot (Option #3).
4F. "Up & Down Pick" (On & Off-Ball)
- The point player passes to the strong-side shooter, who passes the back to the point player (triggering the play).
- At this point, the strong-side shooter down picks for the same-handed crease player, and the weak-side crease player sets an east-west up-pick for the same-handed shooter; the point player passes to the weak-side shooter.
- The weak-side shooter carries the ball overtop of the up-pick for a shot (Option #1), passes to the crease player running up to the soft spot off of the off-ball down-pick (Option #2), passes to down-picker (Option #3) or up-picker (Option #4) who rolls toward the net after they pick.
- Variation: Another variation of this play is to do a down-pick on-ball and an up-pick off-ball (i.e. vice-versa).
