5-On-4 Box Play #4A (“On-Ball Down-Pick”) & Play #4B (“Off-Ball Down-Pick”)
INTERMEDIATE POWER PLAYS
4A. Down-Pick - "On-Ball"
- The point player passes to the same-side shooter, cuts the middle and then picks for the same-side crease player.
- The shooter passes to the same-side crease player before the pick arrives, with the crease player running up toward the soft spot as the pick arrives.
- The crease player can either shoot (Option #1), pass to the point player who rolls to the net (Option #2), or pass to the off-ball crease player (Option #3); the weak-side shooter filling at the point position is also another option on this play (Option #4).
- Variation: This play may also be run off-ball as well (similar to the bottom diagram).
4B. Down-Pick - "Off-Ball"
- The point player passes to the weak-side shooter, which triggers the strong-side shooter to cut the middle (Option #1) and if they don't receive a pass they pick for the same-side crease player.
- The crease player comes overtop of the pick and up toward the soft spot (Option #2); the picker rolls to the middle (Option #3).
- Variation: The pass can come from the weak-side shooter, or from the off-ball crease player as a slight variation.
