5-On-4 Box Play #11B (“Walk – Up Picks”) & Play #11C (“Walk – Up & Down Picks”)
INTERMEDIATE POWER PLAYS
11B. Walk The Middle - "Double Up-Picks"
- Passing back and forth between a shooter and the point player, triggers both crease players to up-pick the high defenders (at the same time) at the top of the box (north-south).
- The point player then passes once back and forth with the other shooter, before running up the middle with the ball for a quality shot as the picks are arriving (Option #1). Both shooters also run underneath the picks as they arrive, further distracting the defense.
- If the point player is unable to squeeze between the picks, the weak-side picker should be open rolling to the middle (Option #2), otherwise the weak-side shooter who should back-door cut to the crease off of the north-south up-pick (Option #3).
- Variation: Crease players can also do "east-west" up-picks or "double cross-picks," allowing the point player to "walk up the middle" (Option #1) or pass to the back door crease player for a quick stick (Option #2).
- Variation: Another variation of this play is for either shooter to drag to the crease position as the up-picks are coming and look to pass to the far-side "roller" or back-door cutter.
11C. Walk The Middle - "Double Up & Down Picks"
- While passing back and forth once between both shooters and the point player, both crease players up-pick the defenders at the top of the box (inside out). See the Box Play #11B above for the "timing."
- As some teams may try to adapt to Box Play #11B by having one or both crease defenders jump out on the point player, both shooters now also run low and seal the crease defenders (inside out).
- The point player runs down the middle with the ball for a quality shot (Option #1), otherwise the play should re-set and run again or be abandoned.
