5-On-4 Box Play #10A (Circle Net – Front Door) & Play #10B (Circle Net – Back Door)
INTERMEDIATE POWER PLAYS
10A. Circle The Net - "Front Door Pass"
- The point player passes to the weak-side shooter, cuts through the middle and circles around the net. While this is happening the weak-side shooter passes to the same-handed crease player who passes back to the shooter, which allows the point player time to circle the net.
- The weak-side shooter tries to time a pass to the point player when they are in between the two low defenders - on their proper floor side (Option #1), with the option to pass to the back-door crease (Option #2) player depending on how the far-side low defender reacts. The strong-side shooter also fills up toward the point position at this time (Option #3).
- If no options present themselves, the point player should continue circling the net a second time. Alternatively, it may also be planned to attempt to pass to this player on their second time around the net, in this case starting the initial passes down the strong-side instead of the weak-side.
10B. Circle The Net - "Back Door Pass"
- The point player passes to the weak-side shooter, then cuts through the middle and circles around the net.
- The shooter then passes to the same-side crease player, which triggers the strong-side crease player to set an east-west up-pick for the same-side shooter. The weak-side crease player then passes back up to the same-side shooter.
- Depending on the reaction of the off-ball low defender, the weak-side shooter can pass to the player coming overtop of the pick (Option #2), the roller (Option #3), or the point player who stops at the back-door crease (Option #1).
- *Note: This play also works well against a Diamond defense.
