5-On-4 Box Play #0 (“Draw & Dump + Freelance”)
BEGINNER POWER PLAYS
0. "Draw & Dump"
- "Draw & Dump" or "Drag & Dump" is the primary aspect of a "freelance" powerplay, which is essentially a 3-on-2 up high, with the point player and both shooters against the two high defenders in a box defense.
- The concept of "dragging" is often utilized whereby a player "draws" their check (who is splitting) out of position (by being a threat); eventually "dumping" the ball to an open teammate for an "uncontested" shot.
0. "Freelance"
- A true "freelance" powerplay utilizes the "draw & dump" technique up high, with plenty of motion and limited in its use of set-plays (except where trying to utilize the best attributes of the team's most skilled players). In other words "pass, pick/seal, roll, replace, cut, shoot" as Casey Powell describes it.
- Spread the defense by staying wide, while also adjusting one's position to help create open passing lanes and seizing opportunities to be a threat; both on-ball and off-ball. Avoid the temptation to creep towards the ball!
- Offensive players should be watching the positioning/personnel of the defensive players, exploiting weaknesses and watching for opportunities to get open for a high percentage shot on goal (i.e. following slides, back-cutting defenders, etc.).
- All players on the floor need to be involved/engaged in order for there to be any sort of continuity or "flow;" if you are not moving your feet you are not involved.
