Goaltending Drill #3B: Goalie Mid-Range Pass
INTERMEDIATE
- Have half of the lefty's/righty's line up in opposite ends of the floor at the far-side mid-boards, on their proper floor sides, with balls. The other half of same-handed players should be on the bench in the same-end, ready to catch an outlet pass and eventually run to the opposite end on a breakaway.
Variation #1 (10 min): "Relief Pass." The drill starts with a player from the line at the mid-boards, in both ends (at the same time), running to the middle of the defensive zone and rolling a ball into the goalie (or coach if there's only one goalie), then running hard to the defensive door in the close-end ("short change"). A same-handed player then comes off the bench out of the offensive door close to the restraining-line/centre-floor, with the goalie making the pass to this player anticipating and timing the pass (“leading” them).
If goalies are too young, need practice in this situation, or are incapable of currently making this long of a pass, coaches can call for players to button hook back to the ball coming off the bench.
Players should quickly clear out of the drill along the boards after their breakaway attempt, joining their respective line on their proper floor side, jogging back to the end of the floor where they started. Goalies should switch ends and pass to the opposite line halfway through the drill.
Variation #2 (10 min): "Window Washer." Same as the variation above except a coach or volunteer player stands in the middle of the passing lane ("window washing") at various distances including on top of the goal crease, in both ends of the floor. This forces the goalie and the receiver of the pass to adapt.
- Variation #4 (10 min): "Consecutive Catches Game." Same as the variations above except have coaches keep track of how many times in a row players catch the ball without a drop. If a ball is dropped, coaches should start their count over from zero, with goalies competing to achieve the highest number of consecutive catches in a row.
Variation #5 (10 min): "Game To 7." To add competition, play a game of lefty’s versus righty’s up to 7 goals, losing team does push-ups, sit-ups, planks, body weight squats, sprints, etc.
- Note: In another variation of this drill players can continue running along the boards on their proper floor side, instead of running into the bench (not shown in diagram).
