Dingo’s Mid Board Cycle (“Spread Offense”)
INTERMEDIATE OFFENSIVE SYSTEM
- This offensive system, otherwise known as a "3-2 Cycle" or "2-3 Cycle," works best against a defense that is pressuring too far out and/or is undisciplined with their switches ("staying" more than switching).
- To set-up, 2 players run to their proper-side crease positions, "tight" to the crease. Another 2 players run to the mid-board positions, with the last player off of the bench filling the point position.
- The point player starts the cycle by passing to either the strong-side or weak-side mid-board position and cutting through the middle, eventually filling the strong-side crease position. If they pass to the strong-side first, there is also a good opportunity to circle the net and then fill the back-door crease for a quick stick opportunity; also helping with the timing and spacing at times.
- In a basic-set, both mid-board players would then run from the mid-boards toward the shooter position, with the ball carrier being a threat and "turning the corner" if possible, otherwise sending a swing pass to the opposite-handed shooter and then cutting through the middle; the crease players fill the open mid-board positions and eventually the shooter positions.
- The opposite-handed shooter can shoot if it's open, but usually teams will look to swing the ball a few times before attempting to make a play, or running a set-play (unless there is a defensive breakdown resulting in a wide-open shot).
If the swing pass is covered, the player being denied the pass should either back-cut their defender, or the passer can pass it back to the mid-boards position on the same-side, before cutting through the middle (which is also the default if no swing pass is received).
Otherwise, if players are being chased out wide by defenders, players cutting through the middle need to abandon filling the crease position and execute intuitive up-picks, ideally from inside-out.
A common set-play within this framework is for the players at the mid-boards to "stall" instead of running up to the shooter positions, with the point player filling the crease position as both crease players run straight up and out to the mid-boards for east-west-picks (See 5-on-5 Set Play #9A).
Note: Weak-side must stay "tighter" (closer together) once the cycle gets going in order for it to run smoothly
