Loose Ball Drill #11B: Face-Off Scrum
ADVANCED (15 MIN)
- Begin with two teams (different coloured pinnies) each side-by-side in 4 separate lines, 10 metres back from the restraining lines, against the boards and facing the neutral zone.
-
- All of the left-handed players should be on one side of the floor and all of the right-handed players on the other side (if numbers are unequal an opposite-handed player may have to be substituted).
-
- The drill starts as soon as the coach rolls the ball somewhere near centre-floor. The team that obtains the loose ball out of the scrum, has one attempt to take it to the opponent's end and obtain a quality shot (Variation #1A). Coaches can create a competition and give half-a-point for a victorious "scrum" and one point for a goal; games up to seven. Another option is to remove goalies from the drill and only do the scrum for the loose ball, with the first team to win 7 loose balls winning the game (Variation #1B).
- Coaches should have players rotate between the two lines on their side of the floor, and later have teams switch directions halfway through the drill (in terms of what goalie they are shooting on).
- Coaches should also keep an eye and give players extended rest periods where required, in order to keep the intensity of the drill at a high level.
