Loose Ball Drill #8B: Face-Off Loose Balls
INTERMEDIATE
- Demo (1 min): Boxing Out, Getting On Hands
- Begin with players in pairs, at each of the traditional face-off restraining line positions, with everyone else standing in pairs inside of the face-off circle.
- Variation #1 (10 min): "1 Vs. 1." The drill starts as soon as the coach (safely) rolls the ball in the direction of any pairing (randomly). Players pursue the ball upon first sight. The player that obtains the loose ball runs it back up the middle of the floor (along with their counterpart), doing their best to stay out of the way of anyone else engaged in the drill.
- Coaches should have players rotate between all of the four different positions, with players also attempting to compete against a different opponent each time through the drill.
- Variation #2 (10 min): "2 Vs. 2." Same as above except coaches divide players into two teams (using coloured pinnies), with two players from each colour competing against each other. This drill may have to operate at a slightly slower speed than the variation above.
- Variation #3 (10 min): "Game To 7." Another option is to make this drill a competition, with goalies involved, and the team who gets the ball getting one opportunity to try to score, before exiting the drill (game is played up to 7 goals).
