Goaltending Drill #8: Ranford’s Reaction Drill
INTERMEDIATE
- Begin with a line of left-handed and a line of right-handed players on their proper floor sides, at the shooter and crease positions, in one or both ends of the floor. Each sequence (repetition) through this drill should begin with the goalie making eye contact with an identified player passing the ball to start the drill.
- Variation #1 (7 min): "Adjacent Pass." Balls start at only the crease lines, with one line of shooters moving down and joining the crease line. The first two players in the crease lines should place a loose ball on the floor 2-3 metres in front of them (closer to the front of the net). The second player in one of the two crease lines should also be ready with a ball, as they are the ones that start the drill with a pass up to the predetermined shooter line (switch halfway through the drill).
- Once the shooter catches the ball they should take a quick set-shot from the perimeter. Whatever side the rebound goes to, the first player in that same-side crease line should quickly run, pick up the loose ball, and take a shot on goal. The remaining player in the other crease line then simultaneously does the same thing in a "bang-bang-bang" orientation.
- Variation #2 (7 min): "Swing Pass." Balls start in all lines except one line of shooters (switch halfway). The first two players in the crease lines should place a loose ball on the floor 2-3 metres in front of them (closer to the front of the net).
- The shooter line with the balls starts the drill by passing to the other shooter line, for a shot. Whatever side the rebound goes to, the first player in the same-side crease line should quickly run, pick up the loose ball, and take a shot on goal. The remaining player in the crease line then simultaneously does the same thing in a "bang-bang-bang" orientation.
Variation #3 (7 min): "Multiple Passes." Similar orientation as the variations above except players are now back in lines at the shooter and crease lines, with the shooter line sending a swing pass to the opposite shooter line after receiving the initial pass from the second player in the same-side crease line; for a shot. One crease line has balls to start, switching to the other crease line halfway through the drill.
