Goaltending Drill #6B: Point To Crease (Quick Stick)
INTERMEDIATE
- Have players and/or coaches line up in one or both ends of the floor, on their proper floor sides, at the point & crease positions; point players (mix of lefty's & righty's) beginning with balls.
- Variation #1 (10 min): "2 Options." The drill starts with eye contact from the goalie who comes out off of the goal-line to challenge the point player (ready position). This player looks at the goalie like they’re going to shoot, but instead passes to either of the crease players (far-side or near-side), who are positioned somewhere near the crease at goal-line-extended, up to as high as the mid-board soft spot, ready to take a quick stick shot on goal (depending on the quality of the pass) from "the island."
- The players should allow the goalie enough time (2-3 seconds) to get "ready" for each rep, with players alternating lines after each rep; point to crease, and vice-versa.
- Variation #2 (10 min): "3 Options." Same as the variation above except this time the point player also has the option to shoot.
- Variation #3 (10 min): "Crease-To-Crease Option." Same as the variations above except when a crease player receives a pass, they now have the option to pass it to the other crease player (ideally as a quick stick), for a shot (1 pass only).
- Variation 4 (10 min): "No Look Passes." Same as the above variations except have players practice "no look" passing, where they pass to the intended player while looking at the goalie or another player. More advanced players can also practice "no look" shooting.
