Goaltending Drill #6A: Powerplay Shooting
INTERMEDIATE
- Have players stationed in one or both ends of the floor, on their proper floor sides, at the point & shooter positions; point players (mix of lefty's & righty's) beginning with balls. All other players not in the drill should be lined up near the rag line on their respective side of the floor.
- Variation #1 (10 min): "3 Player Skeleton." The point player passes back and forth between both shooters, with the shooters also able to pass it shooter-to-shooter; all players being a threat with and without the ball ("draw & dump"). Players need to stay slightly wide of their respective position, moving in and out of a threatening position depending on the movement of the ball.
- After approximately 10 seconds of ball movement, players should take a well timed shot within the flow of this passing sequence. Advanced point players can also work on behind the back (BTB) passes to the strong-side shooter, whereas the 2-on-1 between the weak-side shooter and the point player (imaginary in this case), tends to be the most prevalent shot.
- As players progress, set-plays involving these 3 players can also be worked into this drill, including drags, picks and seals up high. After any shots, all 3 players should aggressively attack the rebound if it's there, with coaches having them either exit the drill or re-set for another rep. At the conclusion of the drill, 3 new players come in, with the handedness of the point player switching each time through (left to right and vice versa), where possible.
Variation #2 (10 min): "2 Defenders." Same as the variation above except this time there are two defenders playing defense, utilizing the 3-step rule. Defenders may be asked to start by playing "soft defense" (Variation #2A), which gives offensive players a better feel for the situation, otherwise, playing live defense (Variation #2B). Whichever offensive player touches the ball last or ends up taking the shot, is out of the drill; the other two offensive players move to defense and the previous two defenders exit the drill.
