Games Drill #3B: Cradling Relay Races (North-South)
- Create a lengthwise (north-south) pylon formation on both sides of the floor and arrange players into 2 or 4 lines of equal numbers (ideally no more than 5 players per line), in one or both ends of the floor. If any line has uneven numbers, the line(s) with less players will have to have somebody go twice in order to make things even.
-
- *Variation #1 (5 min): "Weave." For beginners, have a relay race zig-zagging around the pylons, with players touching the far-end boards then sprinting back to the start, first without a ball (Variation #1A) and later while cradling the ball with the best technique possible (two-hands on the stick).
-
- After cradling through the pylons, roll (Variation #1B) or pass (Variation #1C) the ball to the next player in line; the next player cannot go until the player ahead of them crosses goal-line-extended. If they leave early, coaches can force them to stop for the amount of time they gained in their head start.
-
- Continue the race until every player has gone (including goalies – who sprint in a straight line to centre-floor without a ball). If any player drops their ball during the relay they must go and retrieve the ball and finish going around all pylons before returning to line. The first team with everyone sitting down wins the relay race.
- *Variation #2 (7 min): "Agility Relay." Same rules and variations as above, except have players use various more complex movements that could theoretically happen in a game (i.e. jumping, getting up off of the ground, physical contact, passing; vertical, diagonal, horizontal, and backward foot movements). (Draw Diagram)
- Losing team does push-ups, sit-ups, body weight squats, planks, sprints, etc…
*Most common error = players not cradling tight to their body
