Games Drill #15C: Put It All Together Relay Races
ADVANCED (7 MIN)
- Start with two relay teams in opposite ends of the floor (behind the goal-line), with coaches at centre-floor, on both sides of the floor; with enough balls so that they have one for each player in line. If any line has uneven numbers, the line(s) with less players will have to have somebody go twice in order to make things even.
- Create a relay that incorporates all or some of the basic skills eventually taught (Loose Balls, Cradling, Passing, Catching & Shooting), depending on available facilities.
- Use a long pass back to the last person in line (who is now tired), from one end to the other, with the last person in line passing the ball back once received. Both players must do their best to stay behind the goal-line while making the pass, tracking down any missed passes and finishing all aspects of the relay (no cheating). Have players finish with a shot until they score (coach can help out with errant rebounds at their discretion).
- The next player in line should be ready to go and cannot begin until their teammate scores. If they do leave early, coaches can force them to stop for the amount of time they gained in their head start.
- Continue the race until every player has gone. If any player drops their ball during the relay they must go and retrieve the ball and finish the requirements of the race before returning to line. The first team with everyone sitting down wins the race.
- Losing team does push-ups, planks, body weight squats, sprints, etc…
