Defense Drill #9D: Contained Pursuit
ADVANCED
- Demo (1 min): Pursuit, Containment
- In one or both ends of the floor, arrange two pylons horizontally (east-west) at roughly the shooter position, with the pylon closest to the boards being 2 metres away; about 10 metres away from each other. There should be an offensive player with a ball starting lower than the defender, who has their stick placed on the offensive player's lower back; both players on their proper floor-sides; between the pylons.
- All other players set to go in the drill should be standing against the boards, or near the restraining lines. The rotation through the drill could see players play offense, defense, then exiting the drill; otherwise, having players on Offense-Defense only, alternating from side to side each time through the drill.
- Variation #1 (10 min): "Shadowing." During a game, after a defender is hypothetically successful in funneling a ball carrier underneath (a sticks length away and positioned on their inside shoulder), the defender should stay on their pursuit while also being sure not to be over-aggressive (out of balance) and susceptible to getting beat back over-top.
This drill positions the defender in the ideal position to start and their only job is to not get beat back up to the shooter position (inside of either pylon). If it happens, the offensive player can attempt to take a shot, with the defender trying to recover using a trail check. Otherwise, they have 5 seconds to try and beat the defender who does their best to "contain" the ball carrier between the pylons.
Variation #2 (10 min): "Fixed Off-Ball Help." Same as the above drill variation except a coach or volunteer defender stands a sticks length away from the inside pylon (closest to the middle), showing help and perhaps slashing the ball carrier if they come too close.
Variation #3 (10 min): "Dynamic Off-Ball Help." Similar to the above variation except there is a simultaneous off-ball one-on-one happening on the other side of the floor (the players waiting to go next in the drill), and the ball carrier has the option to try to pass it to the other offensive player if they are open at any time.
