Defense Drill #5B: Rebound Box-Out Drill
INTERMEDIATE
- Demo (1 min): Goalie Communication
- Start with a line of right-handed players and left-handed players on their proper floor side in both corners, in one or both ends of the floor. The players in the corners should be standing along the side-boards in order to not get in the way of any battles behind the net.
- Variation #1 (5 min): "1 Vs. 1 Stick Upside-Down." The drill starts with one defensive player (stick "upside-down") standing underneath (if beginner - as shown in the diagram) or over-top of (if advanced - not shown in the diagram), and either facing or facing away from, an offensive player in the middle (who is also facing or has their back to the net - mix it up) of the defensive zone.
- The coach shoots a ball at the goalie trying to create a rebound with the goalie's help (or rolls it into the defenders feet) and the offensive player has to try to get the ball while the defender focuses on boxing them out (it may take 2-3 reps to get the desired timing and effect). The goalies should also be trained to yell "ball down" or "loose," upon first sight of the ball. The rep is finished when the coach blows their whistle.
- Depending on numbers, coaches can select which line is on offense/defense and then switch half-way through the drill (Variation #1A), the defensive player can move to offense and the offensive player can exit after the drill (Variation #1B), or the offensive player can move to defense and the the defensive player can exit the drill (Variation #1C); which is the most difficult for the defender due to being in a state of fatigue.
Variation #2 (10 min): "1 vs. 1 With Breakout." Same drill set-up and execution as the above variation except the drill starts with the defensive player holding their stick normally.
This variation is also not finished until: the defender clears the zone, the coach blows their whistle (discretionary) or the offensive player scores. If the goalie corrals the ball, the defensive player should try to get open for an outlet pass; with the offensive player riding them.
Variation #3 (7 min): "2 vs. 2 With Breakout." Same as the above variations except the drill starts with two defensive players (with sticks) standing underneath two offensive players.
The drill is not finished until: the coach blows their whistle (discretionary), a defender "clears the zone" with the ball or passes it to their teammate or an offensive player scores.
If the goalie corrals the ball at any point, both defenders must run up-floor and/or cut back to the goalie for an outlet pass if required; subsequently clearing the ball ("running in two's").
