Cardio Drill #7: Linds’ Compete Drill
INTERMEDIATE
- Arrange players evenly into two lines designated as offense and defense, within an imaginary lengthwise half of the floor marked off with pylons, and players lined up near the goal-line, in opposite corners, in opposite ends.
- Players should alternate between the defensive line and the offensive line each time through the drill.
- Variation #1 (10 min): "Defensive Head-Start." Start with the defensive line having a slight head start (1-2 metres) over the offensive line; otherwise starting facing the offensive player and moving backwards, such as in a press situation.
- The first player in the offensive line receives a pass from the coach (or starts with a ball) and runs the length of the floor trying to get the defender off balance and run past them.
- The defensive player attempts to contain the offender in the open floor and tries to force them to take a bad shot.
- Coaches should keep a close eye on the players, watching that the intensity of the players does not drop off significantly, at which point the drill should be terminated (or greater rest periods allowed).
- Variation #2 (10 min): "Offensive Head-Start." Same as the above variation except this time the offensive line has a slight head start (1-2 metres) over the defensive line.
- The defensive player must chase the offensive player as they run toward the other end on a breakaway, with the goal of turning the breakaway into a "partial breakaway."
Variation #3 (15 min): "Team Competition." Similar to the above variations except all players start on the bench, organized into two separate teams (i.e. offense specialists vs. defense specialists). Starting on the coaches whistle, 2 to 4 (predetermined) players from each team come off of each bench and compete until one team scores, at which point new player(s) come onto the floor from each team, with the goalie re-starting play with a pass to their teammates; game is played to 7 (Variation #3A).
The other way to do it is to work on "Special Endurance" and have it so only the team that gets scored on sends in new player(s), with the team that scored staying on for as long as possible (Variation #3B).
