Cardio Drill #11B: Offensive-Specific – Special Endurance (Off-Ball Stamina)
ADVANCED
- On one side of the floor, mark two pylons (north-south) at the crease and shooter position (10 metres apart), and another two pylons (east-west) intersecting between the mid-boards and the middle of the offensive zone (10 metres apart). A coach should place a ball in the corner on the opposite side of the floor, 15 metres away from the lowest pylon in the "diamond" formation; keeping it consistent for test/re-test purposes.
- For the "Off-Ball Stamina Test," players can either start at the side-boards near the restraining line, or at the pylon marking the shooter position. Motion #1 is to sprint from the shooter pylon to the middle pylon, then back-pedal from the middle pylon to the crease pylon (Motion #2). The player then side shuffles up to the mid-board pylon (Motion #3); sprints to the middle pylon (Motion #4); sprints and picks up the loose ball in the far corner (Motion #5); carries the ball behind the net (outside of the crease) to the crease pylon (Motion #6); sprints up to the mid-board pylon (Motion #7); sprints over to the middle pylon and shoots (Motion #8); lastly the player sprints back to the restraining-line (Motion #9), at which point their time is recorded.
Players do the drill twice, with a 30 second break in between (which measures heart rate recovery time). Two "timers" and two "time recorders" are required for efficiency sake, with the next player ready to go as soon as the one ahead of them is done. This allows coaches to time two players consecutively when in a try-out setting (4 consecutive reps total).
It is also possible to run the "Defensive Specific Special Endurance Test" on one side of the floor and this test for "Offensive Special Endurance" on the other.
Motion detecting timing systems on individual athletes would be best practice. The idea would be to establish a baseline for the athlete and track the athletes progress throughout the course of the season; otherwise as a tool to help make final roster decisions.
