5-On-5 Play #6A (“Phoenix – Weak-Side”) & Play #6B (“Phoenix – Strong-Side”)
INTERMEDIATE SET PLAYS
6A. Weak-Side "Phoenix/Arizona/Rattler/Rub"
- The ball is passed to the weak-side shooter who immediately attacks the net (underneath), at which point the weak-side crease player creates a seal about two metres up and out, away from the crease (underneath the middle defender).
- The shooter cuts underneath the seal (timing) and either shoots (Option #1) or passes to the off-ball crease player for a quick stick shot (Option #2). Option #3 is a skip pass to the far-side shooter position, with the point player first cycling through the middle and filling into the crease position.
- Variation: This play can also be run off-ball, with the seal still happening on the weak-side and a pass coming from the strong-side crease player as the weak-side shooter runs underneath the seal.
6B. Strong-Side "Phoenix/Arizona/Rattler/Rub"
- The ball starts on the strong-side of the floor and is passed to the half-board, at which point the crease player creates a seal about two metres up and out, away from the crease (underneath the middle defender).
- The player at the half-board simultaneously drags (backpedals) low to the position, while the point player runs down and receives a pass as they cut underneath the seal (timing). This player receives a pass (Option #1), or if they aren't open the ball can be passed to the off-ball crease player (Option #2). Option #3 is a skip pass to the far-side shooter position, with the point player first cycling through the middle and filling into the crease position.
- Note: This play can be set-up using multiple variations and is one of the best ways to beat the Pressure-Down Defense.
- Variation: This play can also be run off-ball, with the seal still happening on the strong-side and a pass coming from the weak-side crease player as the point player runs underneath the seal.
