Goaltending Drill #3C: Goalie Long Pass
ADVANCED
- Have half of the lefty's/righty's line up in opposite ends of the floor at the mid-boards, on their proper floor sides, with balls. The other half of same-handed players should be on the bench in the far-end, ready to catch a breakaway pass and finish on the goalie in the opposite end.
- In another form of this drill, players can continue running along the boards on their proper floor side, instead of running into the bench (not shown in diagram).
- Variation #1 (10 min): "Long Change." The drill starts with a player from one of the lines on the mid-boards, in both ends, running (at the same time) to the middle of the defensive zone and rolling a ball into the goalie, then running hard to the defensive door in the far-end ("long-change"). The goalie then makes a “home-run pass,” anticipating where to throw the ball (to the player coming off of the bench) and timing the pass. “Leading” the player coming off of the bench with a "lob-bounce" pass thrown early can also be an effective pass for advanced goalies to practice.
- Players should quickly clear out of the drill along the boards after their breakaway attempt, joining their respective line on their proper floor side, jogging back to the end of the floor where they started; goalies should switch ends and pass to the opposite line halfway through the drill.
Variation #2 (10 min): "Window Washer." Same as the variation above except a coach or volunteer player stands in the middle of the passing lane ("window washing") at various distances including on top of the goal crease, in both ends of the floor. This forces the goalie and the receiver of the pass to adapt.
- Variation #3 (10 min): "Consecutive Catches Game." Same as the variations above except have coaches keep track of how many times in a row players catch the ball without a drop. If a ball is dropped, coaches should start their count over from zero, with goalies competing to achieve the highest number of consecutive catches in a row.
Variation #4 (10 min): "Game To 7." To add competition, play a game of lefty’s versus righty’s up to 7 goals, losing team does push-ups, sit-ups, planks, body weight squats, sprints, etc.
