Stickwork Drill #7A: “Off-Balance” Offensive Footwork
INTERMEDIATE
- Start with two rows containing sets of 2 pylons, 5 metres apart in north-south lines at roughly the shooter/crease positions on both sides, in one or both ends of the floor. Station a player on their proper floor side between every 2 pylons.
Variation #1A (5 min): "Side-Shuffle Figure-8." With players next to go in the drill standing in the middle with balls, the players within the pylons begin a figure-8 footwork pattern, side-shuffling as much as possible but also running forward where required (errant passes etc.). The players between the pylons then begin playing pass with a player in the middle, trying to send the pass in as the player is coming around one or the other pylon. The player between the pylons passes back to the player in the middle, while maintaining their footwork as best as possible and first taking a look at the net (being a threat) before making the pass.
Players between the pylons practice their footwork for 30 seconds and then exit the drill on the coaches whistle, with the player they were playing pass with now starting between the pylons and performing the same sequence on the coaches next whistle.
Goalies can also act as passers in the middle, practice lob passes with their goalie partner, otherwise take shots from an available coach/player.
Variation #1B (5 min): "North-South Figure-8." Same as the above variation except players must run forward toward the net (around a pylon) and back-pedal away from the net (around a pylon), while executing the figure-8 pattern.
Variation #1C (5 min): "East-West Passing." Same as the above variations except players are removed from the middle (now standing on the outside of the drill) and players in the drill on opposite sides from each other are now playing catch (for 30 seconds max), using whatever footwork pattern is necessary to keep a good flow. Intermediate players can track consecutive catches and advanced players can use 2 balls for more of a challenge.
Variation #1D (5 min): "Consecutive Catches Game." Same as the above variations of the drill except have players keep track of how many times in a row they catch the ball without a drop. If a ball is dropped, players must start their count over from zero.
Variation #2A (7 min): "Shot From the Crease." Same as the above variations except after 10 seconds the coach blows their whistle and the pair of players closest to the crease attempt a quality shot on net and then exit the drill, receiving a new ball from the coach. All other pairings then shift forward between a set of pylons closer to the net, and the pair that just had a shot now goes between the pylons furthest from the net (or rests outside of the drill before returning - depending on numbers). The other groups don't start passing again until the group that just shot sprints to the pylon furthest away from the net.
Variation #2B (7 min): "Shot From the Shooter." Same as the above variation except the rotation is opposite in that the players at the shooter position now take the shot, and then relocate back to the crease area.
