Transition Drill #10: West Genny Drill
ADVANCED
- Push the nets forward until they are roughly in line with the back door of both benches, on opposite sides of the neutral zone; with artificial creases or creases made of pylons.
- Divide players equally into two or three lines, on both sides of the crease. Players should be on their proper floor sides, goal-line-extended relative to the new position of the nets, on opposite (both) sides of the neutral zone.
- Variation #1 (10 min): "2-On-1's." Begin with a player standing in the middle on defense and two players running forward (one or the other with a ball) for a standard 2-on-1. The player who takes the shot (or the last player to touch the ball) is out of the drill and the non-shooter must recover back on defense as 2 new players run into the play, creating a continuous 2-on-1. - Variation #2 (10 min): "3-On-2's." Same as the above variation except this time two defenders (the 2 non-shooters) must get back on defense after the shot, and there is also a third line of offenders that also joins the play, starting on either side of the net ("inside lane").
Variation #3 (10 min): "Scrambled." Same as the above variations except players are randomly distributed in both offensive lines instead of starting on their proper floor side.
Variation #4 (10 min): "Build Up." Same drill set-up as the above variations except it starts with a breakaway from one end (with the shooter playing defense after the shot), a 2-on-1 back (with both offensive players staying on defense after the shot), then a 3-on-2 back the other way. The drill will have to start from opposite ends each time, to ensure that an equal number of players remain in each end after each "build up."
Variation #5 (10 min): "Teams." Same drill set-up as the above variations except designate both ends as teams, wearing pinnies, and the player who touches the ball last has to jog back to the original end they started in (outside of the drill), in order for players to always begin from the same end of the floor. Play games up to 7, with the losing team having to do sprints, push ups, squats or some other consequence.
