Stickwork Drill #8A: “Adjacent Shot” & “Finish” In Front
- Demo (2 min): Finishing In Front, "Eyes Of The Stick," Faking, Series Of Fakes, Adjacent Shot
- Variation #1 (7 min): "In-Tight Finish." Players start lined up on their proper floor side crease position, with balls already in their sticks; the drill alternating from side to side each rep. One player from each line should be positioned facing the net, on a 45 degree angle from the near-side post, before eventually stepping towards the far-side of the goaltender (real or imaginary), trying to shoot it off of the far-post and into the net - unbeknownst to the goalie (Variation #1A). Players can also be given the chance to practice different series' of fakes on the goalie "in tight," practicing different patterns first against the boards and later against the goalie from varying distances; starting in perfect position (Variation #1B). For added difficulty, a coach (or coaches on both sides) can be stationed 1-2 metres back from the crease, making token trail checks on players as they walk the crease, which forces them to protect their stick while finishing (Variation #1C).
Variation #2 (10 min): "Coach Passer." Have coaches stationed at the crease positions (Variation #2A) or the shooter positions (Variation #2B); both loaded with balls. There should also be lines of players on their proper-side at the shooter positions receiving a pass for what's known as an "adjacent shot"; or at the crease positions "finishing at the crease"; depending on what skill the coach wants to practice. In both situations, players step into the prime scoring area in the triple threat position and get a pass from the coach, ultimately working on their ability in one or both of these scenarios.
This drill can also be done with a coach and an individual player at the end of practice, thereby getting the luxury of extra reps. Coaches can also command specific shot selection patterns and fake series' (Variation #2C), depending on the calibre of players.
Variation #3 (10 min): "Player Passer." Have players stationed at the crease and shooter positions on both sides of the floor. The crease players have the balls and should first engage and then pass the ball up to the same-side shooter for an "adjacent shot" (Variation #3A).
The same-side shooter should be standing perpendicular to the net and taking a "crow-hop" towards the net as the pass is arriving, loading up to shoot (quick release). Alternate sides each rep, with 1-2 seconds between reps. Have players switch lines (shooter to crease & crease to shooter) after each rep (staying on their proper floor side).
Another variation of this set-up would be to start the balls at the shooter position, with this player being a threat and then dumping a pass down to the crease player, who finishes with a shot "in tight" (Variation #3B).
Variation #4 (7 min): "Outside & Inside Shot." Same as the above variation except one side passes shooter to crease, and the other side passes crease to shooter (making the drill more challenging for the goalies). All players have balls except for two players on opposite sides, to start the drill.
After the player takes their turn making a pass, the other side takes their turn, and then the passer becomes the receiver of the pass. Continue in this manner, switching from one side to the other in terms of where the shot is coming from, also with high shots versus low shots.
Variation #5 (7 min): "Mix Release Points." Same as the above variations except coaches instruct players to take a certain type of shot: overhand, side-arm, underhand, cripplers or bounce shots.
Variation #6 (7 min): "Screen Shots." Same as the above variations except that two "dummy defenders" are added, acting as screens at the crease and shooter positions (with the dummy's moving with the shooters to help the screen be effective), which helps players get the feel for more of a game-like situation. The dummy defender could be a volunteer (or appointed by the coach), otherwise after shooting the shooter becomes the "dummy." Dummy defenders should also be encouraged to practice corralling rebounds off of the goalie (shooting if it's there) before switching lines.
Variation #7 (10 min): "Crease Dives." Same as variations #1 to #3, except coaches bring out an old mattress (or blow-up mattress) for players to crease dive onto. Another complimentary item for coaches to have in this scenario would be a checking pad, which adds the physical contact element of this skill.
Variation #8 (10 min): "Game To 7." To add competition, play a game of lefty’s versus righty’s up to 7 goals, with the losing team doing push-ups, sit-ups, planks, body weight squats, sprints, etc. Furthermore, coaches can make it so 2 goals can be tallied on "bounce shots" if they feel like that particular skill is worthy of emphasis.
Variation #9 (10 min): "No Drops/No Misses Game." For every ball that is dropped and/or misses the net during the drill players will have to sprint from one side-board (or end-board) to the other. For every goal that is scored, one sprint is removed from the total, with goalies having to run if the players keep their sprint total at or below zero.
Variation #10 (10 min): "No Look Passes." Same as the above variations except have players practice "no look" passing, where they pass to the intended player while looking at the goalie or another player.
